No immediate changes to road
tax procedures will take place, despite recent proclamations by the
authorities that they would be implemented by the beginning of the new
tax year.
Communications Minister Nicos Nicolaides said on Tuesday that the
public should renew road tax on their vehicles by the end of the month
according to the current rates.
“The Ministry is still studying ways to regulate road tax in a
fairer manner and still considering whether road tax should be based on
the amount of emissions a vehicle produces,” he said.
He added that all motorists should renew their road tax as they had
done before stressing that renewals had already begun and will continue
until the end of January.
Road tax can be renewed in five ways, at the Road Transport
Department, through customer service centers, at commercial banks or
co-ops and online.
Nicolaides said that the government also intended to install speed
cameras throughout the island, by end of the year in three phases,
after the tender review board resolves the appeal set by the private
company which installed the first batch of speed cameras.
The company appealed against the government’s move to annul the
contract claiming the speed cameras do not meet the required
specifications.
The speed cameras that are currently installed around Cyprus have been out of operation for over a year.
